Introduction
Yukika Hosokawa was a daimyo in the late Edo period, serving as the 9th lord of the Udo Domain in Higo Province. His court rank was Junior Fifth Rank, Lower, with titles including Nakatsukasa no Dainagon, Buzen no Kami, and Saemon no Jou.
Regarding his life, he was born in 1811 (Bunka 7) as the second son of the 7th Daimyo, Hosokawa Tatsuoki. His childhood name was Kumanojō, and he initially used the name Yukihisa. Later, he changed his name to Yukika, taking the honorific from the first lord Hosokawa Yukitaka.
On April 4, 1826 (Bunsei 9), following the inheritance of the Kumamoto Domain by his elder brother Hosokawa Tadamasa (later renamed Saigo), he succeeded as head of the Udo Domain. In the following year, on October 1, 1827 (Bunsei 10), he had an audience with Shogun Tokugawa Ienari. On December 16 of that year, he was awarded the court rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Lower, and officially titled Nakatsukasa no Suké.
In 1851 (Kaei 4), on May 24, he retired and handed over the family headship to his second son, Tatenori. Later, during the Meiji Restoration, he had an audience with Emperor Meiji on April 7, 1870.
He died on May 10, 1876 (Meiji 9), at the age of 67.
Concerning his lineage, he had 11 sons and 10 daughters.
His biological father was Hosokawa Tatsuoki, his biological mother was Eishōin (daughter of Toshiaki Doi), and his adoptive father was Hosokawa Tadamasa.
His primary wife was the daughter of Takahisa Mouri. His children included his eldest son Hosokawa Rekkoku, second son Hosokawa Tatenori (mother was his official wife), third son Oda Nobutaka (adopted son of Oda Nobutada), fifth son Hosokawa Yukimasa, ninth son Ogasawara Toshiaki (son-in-law of Ogasawara Sadatoshi, daughter of Ogasawara Aiko), and tenth son Honjo Jukyo (son-in-law of Honjo Michiyoshi, daughter of Honjo Kume).
There were also multiple other connections through marriage to cousins and adoptive relationships.
