Wang Zhelan, a native of Jiangsu Province, was the wife of Jiang Shangqing, a Communist martyr, and is regarded as the adoptive mother of Jiang Zemin.
She and Jiang Shangqing had two daughters together, Jiang Zeling and Jiang Zehui. After Jiang Shangqing was killed in 1939, Jiang Shijun arranged for his own son, Jiang Zemin, to be adopted into the family according to traditional customs, making him the posthumous son of the martyr.
During those turbulent years, Wang Zhelan showed resilience in raising her children and preserving the Jiang family tradition. She holds a special place in the early revolutionary family history of the Chinese Communist Party, remembered both as the widow of a martyr and as the adoptive mother of a future paramount leader of China.
