Introduction
George William Hervey, 2nd Earl of Bristol, was born on 3 August 1721. He was the eldest son of John Hervey, 2nd Baron Hervey, and his wife, Mary Hervey. Hervey was involved in military service for several years before embarking on diplomatic and political careers.
In 1755, he was appointed as envoy extraordinary to Turin. From 1758 to 1761, he served as the ambassador at Madrid. During his tenure as ambassador to Spain, Hervey was recognized for fulfilling his duties with competence and dignity. He was associated with the political group aligned with William Pitt the Elder.
Hervey was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1766, a position he held briefly; however, he did not undertake any visits to Ireland during his appointment. Following this, he served as keeper of the Privy Seal for a short period. In January 1770, he was appointed Groom of the Stool to King George III, a role he held until his death.
He died unmarried, with his death occurring between 18 and 20 March 1775. Hervey had a youthful romantic relationship with Lady Townshend, but he did not marry. Upon his death, he was succeeded by his brother.
