Introduction

Wen Jia, born in 1964 in Hunan Province, China, joined her school’s girls’ junior gymnastics team while studying at Xiuyue School in the Furong District of Changsha, beginning her early gymnastics training.

In her athletic career, Wen Jia won the women's individual all-around and the balance beam titles at the Hartford International Gymnastics Invitational in the United States in August 1980. In the same year she represented China in international competition. In 1981 she was part of the Chinese team that won the silver medal in the women's team event at the World Gymnastics Championships. At the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi she led the Chinese team to the women's team gold and took the silver in the women's floor exercise.

Regarding her family life, Wen Jia is married and has two daughters, Li Anqi and Li Anling. Her daughter Li Anqi began a relationship with Chinese male gymnastics Olympic champion Li Xiaopeng in 2003; the couple married on June 3, 2010. On January 12, 2012, Li Anqi’s daughter (Wen Jia’s granddaughter) Ao Li (Chinese name Li Xinqi) was born in Los Angeles, USA. Later, on May 11, 2016, another grandchild nicknamed “Oreo” was also born in the United States.

After retiring from competition, Wen Jia moved to the United States with her family and later founded the South Coast Gymnastics Club in Anaheim. She and her husband, Li Xiaoping, ran the club together after retirement; over more than a decade they gradually expanded it. During the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim, the family accompanied and provided services to the Chinese gymnastics team. Their strong patriotism also helped facilitate the marriage between their daughter Li Anqi and Li Xiaopeng.

In the spring of 2006, Li Xiaoping and Wen Jia’s family returned to Beijing for a holiday and stayed in the city for a time. As the Olympics approached, Li Xiaoping was invited back to China, while the family’s Anaheim gymnastics club was managed by Wen Jia and her daughters.

Major competitive honors from her athletic career include: first place in the women’s individual all-around (and second place on balance beam) at the 1980 Hartford Invitational; team silver at the 1981 World Gymnastics Championships; and women’s team gold and floor exercise silver at the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games. Her achievements have been widely recognized by the public.

In summary, Wen Jia is a well-known Chinese gymnast who achieved significant results on the international stage and later engaged in club management and family business after retiring.
