Mary Louisa Bruce, Countess of Elgin and Kincardine (née Lambton), was born on 8 May 1819 and died on 9 March 1898. She was a member of the British aristocracy and identified as a writer.
Her parentage includes John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, and his second wife Louisa Elizabeth Lambton, née Grey. Louisa Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey.
In her lifetime, she traveled to Canada on two occasions. The first visit occurred between 29 May and 1 November 1838, when her father was in Canada to investigate the Lower Canada Rebellion. The second trip to Canada was undertaken with her husband, James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, and took place from 1847 to 1853.
Mary Louisa Bruce was also known for her artistic pursuits. She was an accomplished artist and studied under John Richard Coke-Smyth. Her studies in art were alongside her sister, Lady Emily Augusta, and Katherine Ellice, who was her travel companion.
As a writer, she created and illustrated journals and diaries documenting her international travels.
