Jifenhua

Ji Fenhua, born in 1972, is from Wujin Town, Hexian County, Anhui Province, China. In her early years, she responded to the call of Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong and at the age of 19 participated in the "Up to the Mountains and Down to the Countryside" movement, engaging in agricultural labor in Wujin Town. She worked in the fields there for eight months before being assigned to teach at a local elementary school. It is reported that during her time working in rural areas, her physical appearance was described as “white and thin,” which was considered unsuitable for farming.

During her tenure in Wujin Town, Ji Fenhua made several trips back to Shanghai. During this period, she developed a romantic relationship with Liu Xuegen, a son of the Shanghai Waterworks Company. In 1979, at the age of 26, she obtained permission to return to Shanghai and married Liu Xuegen in the same year. After returning to Shanghai, she worked as a pastry chef at a state-owned food store, mainly selling candies and cakes, dressed in a white coat.
