Introduction
George John Sackville-West, 5th Earl de la Warr, was born on 26 October 1791. He was initially styled Viscount Cantelupe until 1795, when he succeeded his father as Earl de la Warr at the age of three. His parents were John West, 4th Earl de la Warr, and Catherina Lyell, the daughter of Henry Lyell, a naturalized British subject of Swedish noble descent (born Henrik Leijel, belonging to the Swedish noble family Leijel, number 1531).
Sackville-West held positions within the British court and government. He served as Lord Chamberlain of the Household under Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel from 1841 to 1846 and again under Lord Derby from 1858 to 1859. In 1841, he was sworn into the Privy Council of the United Kingdom.
On 21 June 1813, he married Lady Elizabeth Sackville, daughter of John Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset, and Arabella Diana Cope. Together, they had ten children, nine of whom survived to adulthood. Their first child was George West, Viscount Cantelupe (1814–1850), who was a Member of Parliament for Helston and Lewes but died unmarried. Their second son was Charles Sackville-West, who became the 6th Earl de la Warr (1815–1873). Other children included Reginald Sackville, who became the 7th Earl de la Warr (1817–1896), and Lady Elizabeth Sackville-West (1818–1897), who married Francis Russell, 9th Duke of Bedford, and had children.
Mortimer Sackville-West, the 1st Baron Sackville (1820–1888), was another son, along with a son born in 1822 who died in infancy. Lady Mary Catherine (1824–1900) married twice—first to James Gascoyne-Cecil, 2nd Marquess of Salisbury, and secondly to Edward Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby. Lionel Sackville-West became the 2nd Baron Sackville (1827–1908). William Sackville-West (1830–1905) married Georgina Dodwell and had issue, including Lionel Sackville-West, the 3rd Baron Sackville. Their youngest child, Lady Arabella Diana Sackville-West (1835–1869), married Sir Alexander Bannerman, 9th Baronet.
George John Sackville-West died on 23 February 1869. His contributions to Parliament and service to the Crown are documented in historical records such as "The Peerage and Baronetage of the British Empire as at Present Existing" by Edmund Lodge, published in 1892.
