Introduction

Arthur William Ashton Peel, 2nd Earl Peel, was born on 29 May 1901 and died on 22 September 1969. He was a British peer and a member of the aristocratic Peel family. Peel was the son of William Peel, 1st Earl Peel, and the Honourable Eleanor "Ella" Williamson, who was the daughter of James Williamson, 1st Baron Ashton.

He was a great-grandson of Robert Peel, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In 1929, upon his father’s elevation to the earldom, Peel was styled as Viscount Clanfield. He inherited the peerage title of Earl Peel in 1937 following the death of his father.

In addition to the earldom, Peel succeeded to the family baronetcy in 1942, after the death of the 6th baronet, who was his second cousin once removed.

Between 1948 and 1951, Peel served as Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire, a ceremonial position representing the British monarch in that county.

On 11 March 1946, Peel married Kathleen McGrath, the daughter of Michael McGrath. The marriage produced two sons.

Arthur William Ashton Peel died in September 1969 at the age of 68. He was succeeded in the peerage by his eldest son, William Peel.
