Lan Qiongying was the second wife of Macau gambling king Ho Hung Sam, whom she married in 1957. She often accompanied Ho Hung Sam to participate in social and charitable activities, and the two were regarded as the "Dance Emperor" and "Dance Queen." Lan Qiongying had one son and four daughters: Ho Chaoqiong, Ho Chaofeng, Ho Chaojia, Ho Chaoyi, and Ho Youlong. Although Ho Hung Sam was very affectionate toward both wives, the outside world understood that the harmony between the two households was based on separation: Lai Wanhua’s family was based in Macau, while Lan Qiongying resided in Hong Kong. In the late 1980s, Ho Hung Sam invested in Canada, and Lan Qiongying immigrated there with her father, leading to significant changes in their family relationships. Despite this, Ho Hung Sam continued to be flirtatious and was involved with different women, which was unexpected for Lan Qiongying. After Lai Wanhua passed away in 2004, Lan Qiongying worked hard to establish her status as the primary wife and to secure the inheritance rights for her children. As Ho Hung Sam redistributed the family assets, Lan Qiongying’s position was further strengthened. Her children hold important positions within the family business, especially in Melco International, where Ho Youlong’s shares increased significantly. In 2015, Lan Qiongying’s brother passed away, and she attended the funeral as a key family member. In 2022, she died of cancer at the age of 79. Her funeral was conducted privately in accordance with her wishes, without a public memorial service. Lan Qiongying came from a military family; her grandfather was a minor general of the Republic of China, and her father, Lan Jiany, served during the war of resistance. She had five children in total and held a special status within Ho Hung Sam’s family, retaining numerous assets to this day.
