Carol Chu

Zhu Liqian, originally named Zhu Liqing, was born on April 6, 1966, in Penang, Malaysia. Her father, Zhu Jiancheng (originally Zhu Jincheng), was a Malaysian businessman. The family had six children; Zhu Liqian was the third daughter and has one older brother and one younger brother. Her maternal uncle, Chen Zhiyuan, serves as chairman and president of Malaysia’s Success Group.

Zhu moved with her family to Kuala Lumpur at a young age and showed an early interest in fashion and the performing arts. In her teens she entered a beauty contest held by New Trend Weekly and won third place. In 1983 she and her elder sister Zhu Lizhen competed in the New Trend magazine cover-girl contest in Malaysia; her sister won the “March New Trend Miss” title while Zhu Liqian did not place. The following year she entered the New Trend cover-girl contest again, winning the “July Cover Girl” title with 5,369 votes, and she also placed third in the New Trend pageant held in Penang. At the same time she went to Hong Kong to study beauty and began working in fashion-related fields such as runway shows and fashion shoots. In 1985 she earned both the New Trend pageant’s third-place and the Youth Miss honors, and she studied bridal makeup under the instruction of Zheng Mingming.

After finishing high school, Zhu Liqian chose not to pursue further formal education and instead focused on entertainment-related activities. In 1988 she and her sister Zhu Lihua went to Hong Kong to take beauty courses and to manage the family’s restaurant business there.

In her personal life, Zhu Liqian welcomed a daughter, Liu Xianghui, on May 9, 2012. Through a friend she met Hong Kong actor Andy Lau (Liu Dehua); the two began keeping in touch by letters and phone calls from 1986 and later developed a romantic relationship. They registered their marriage in Las Vegas in January 2008 and subsequently held a wedding in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In August 2009 the couple jointly attended Zhu Liqian’s father’s funeral.

Her hobbies include outdoor travel, driving, and dancing. She has appeared on numerous fashion magazine covers and has received various pageant and fashion awards. She has also been active in social causes; in 2008 she and Andy Lau participated together in Buddhist charitable activities.

Professionally, Zhu Liqian’s career has focused on fashion, performing arts, and business management, demonstrating a range of talents and social influence.
