Introduction

Margaret Stanley-Brown Sellers (October 2, 1895 – June 12, 1958) was an American surgeon and medical school professor primarily based in New York City. She was a descendant of President James A. Garfield, being his granddaughter through her mother.

Early Life and Education:

She was born in Washington, D.C., as the youngest child of Joseph Stanley-Brown and Mary (Mollie) Garfield Stanley-Brown. Her mother was the only daughter of President Garfield. Her father served as President Garfield's private secretary and also worked with John Wesley Powell. She had a brother, Rudolph Stanley-Brown, recognized as an architect and writer, and a sister, Ruth, who was a writer and married to historian Herbert Feis.

She attended the Hartridge School in New Jersey. She completed her undergraduate education at Vassar College, graduating in 1919. Subsequently, she earned her medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1923.

Career:

Following her graduation, Stanley-Brown completed her residency and internship at Bellevue Hospital. Her professional surgical roles included positions on the surgical staff at Fifth Avenue Hospital and as assistant director of surgery at City Hospital. She was also appointed as a faculty member at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

In 1953, she moved to Connecticut, where she served as a surgeon at New Milford Hospital. She was affiliated with the New York Surgical Society and was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Publications:

Stanley-Brown contributed as a co-author to multiple research papers published in scholarly journals. Her research covered topics related to blood coagulation and surgical diseases. Notable publications include:

- "Evaluation of blood clotting factors in surgical diseases" (1929, with Frederic W. Bancroft and I. Newton Kugelmass)

- "The determination and regulation of blood clotting function in childhood" (1930, with Bancroft and Kugelmass)

Personal Life:

In 1950, she married Max K. Sellers, a widowed writer. She died at the age of 64 in 1958 at a hospital in New Milford, Connecticut.
