Introduction
Joseph Stanley-Brown was born on February 3, 1858, in Washington, D.C. He received education in public schools in Washington, D.C., where he learned shorthand and typing. He attended the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University, where he studied geology.
Brown worked as a stenographer for John Wesley Powell, the founder of the United States Geological Survey. He served as the editor of the Bulletin of the Geological Society of America for forty years.
In 1888, Brown married Mary "Mollie" Garfield, the daughter of President James A. Garfield. Brown served as a private secretary to President Garfield during his presidency. He was appointed to manage the office-seekers due to the influence of the spoils system, a task that increased in complexity during Garfield's tenure. After Garfield's assassination and subsequent reforms led by Vice President Chester A. Arthur, measures to curb the spoils system were implemented.
Brown was also involved in banking and railroad industries during his career. He spent his final years in Pasadena, California, where he died on May 17, 1941. His remains were interred alongside his wife in Garfield's tomb.
