Introduction
Princess Hiroko (Born: May 2, 1871 (Meiji 4) — Death: November 22, 1889), was a noble during the early Meiji era. She was the fourth daughter of Prince Ajiro Kuni no Miya Asahiko, and her mother was the court lady Izumi Mangiko. She was also a half-sister to Prince Kuni Kunihiko, the grandfather of Emperor Meiji.
According to detailed historical records, Princess Hiroko entered the Biku-ni residential palace at Chōfuku-ji (Kyoto City) at the age of six and subsequently spent her days in spiritual training. Her life was cut short at a young age. She died of illness on November 22, 1889 (Meiji 22), at the age of 18 (by Japanese age counts, 19 years old). Her funeral was held on November 28 of that year. Her burial site is located at Kōun-in in Kyoto City, within the Kuni no Miya family graveyard.
