Introduction
Takatsukasa Sukemasa (鷹司 輔政) was born on August 18, 1849. He was the son of Regent Sukehiro and was part of the Takatsukasa family, a branch of the Fujiwara clan, which held the position of kugyō, or Japanese court noble, during the late Edo period (Tokugawa shogunate) and the early Meiji period.
Sukemasa was connected through marriage to the Tokushima Domain; one of his consorts was a daughter of Hachisuka Narihiro, the thirteenth head of those domain. Details of his educational background are not available, but his family background indicates he was raised within the aristocratic court hierarchy that played a significant role in political and social affairs.
His period of activity as a court noble coincided with a time of political transition in Japan, transitioning from the Tokugawa shogunate to the Meiji government. However, there is limited information regarding his specific contributions or roles in court or government affairs.
Takatsukasa Sukemasa died at the age of 19 on September 11, 1867. His death occurred shortly before the formal Meiji Restoration, which began in 1868.
