Introduction
Lynda Bird Johnson Robb (née Johnson) was born on March 19, 1944. She is the oldest child of Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States, and Lady Bird Johnson, the former First Lady. Her birth occurred after her mother experienced three miscarriages, and her father suggested her name as a combination of her parents' names, resulting in "Lynda Bird."
Johnson attended the National Cathedral School for Girls and later graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She also briefly studied at Mercy College.
In her personal life, she was initially engaged to Bernard Rosenbach. Subsequently, she became involved with actor George Hamilton, with their relationship beginning in 1966. Johnson later married Charles S. Robb, a U.S. Marine Corps Captain. The couple has three daughters: Lucinda Desha Robb, born in 1968; Catherine Lewis Robb, born in 1970; and Jennifer Wickliffe Robb, born in 1978.
Her public service roles include chairing the President's Advisory Committee for Women, appointed by President Jimmy Carter on May 9, 1979. The committee comprised 30 members and was tasked with promoting gender equality across various sectors of American life, including cultural, social, economic, and political areas.
Johnson served as First Lady of Virginia from 1982 to 1986 and as Second Lady of Virginia from 1978 to 1982. She also held the position of chairwoman of the Board of Reading is Fundamental, an organization dedicated to children's literacy, and has worked as a magazine editor.
Throughout her life, Johnson has represented her family at notable state and national events. In 2004, she attended the state funeral of President Ronald Reagan on behalf of her mother, Lady Bird Johnson, who was unable to attend due to ill health. She repeated a similar role at the funeral of President Gerald Ford in 2006. In 2018, she participated in the state funeral of President George H. W. Bush alongside her husband, Charles Robb, her sister Luci Baines Johnson, and her brother-in-law Ian Turpin.
As of December 21, 2013, Johnson is recognized as the oldest living child of a U.S. president, following the death of John Eisenhower. She also serves as a Vice President of the Society of Presidential Descendants.
