Introduction

Countess Johanna Sophia of Hohenlohe-Langenburg was born on 16 December 1673 in Langenburg, Germany. She was a member of the House of Hohenlohe by birth and was the sixth daughter of Count Henry Frederick of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and his second wife, Dorothea Juliana, Countess of Castell-Remlingen (1640–1706).

Johanna Sophia was noted for her intelligence and was considered an apt student, in addition to her noted physical beauty.

On 4 January 1691, in Langenburg, she married Count Frederick Christian of Schaumburg-Lippe (1655–1728). Early in their marriage, she accompanied her husband during his travels, which were frequent; however, over time, she was left at home more often. The marriage eventually encountered disagreements, leading her to move with her two sons to Hanover. The marriage was dissolved by divorce in 1723.

Count Frederick Christian remarried two years later, on 3 December 1725, to his mistress, Maria Anna Victoria von Gall (1707–1760), daughter of Johann Michael von Gall and Maria Anna von Enzenberg.

Johanna Sophia and Frederick Christian had several children, of whom the following survived infancy:

- Albert Wolfgang (1699–1748), who became Count of Schaumburg-Lippe in 1728 and held the title until his death in 1748.

- Frederick Charles Louis (1702–1776).

Their other children included:

- Frederick August (1693–1694)

- Wilhelm Ludwig (1695–1695)

- Sophie Charlotte (1697–1697)

- Philip (1697–1698).

In her later life, Johanna Sophia developed a friendship with Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1683–1737), who later became the wife of King George II of Great Britain. She accompanied Caroline to the United Kingdom and served as a Lady-in-Waiting at the English court of the Kings of Hanover in London.

Johanna Sophia died on 18 August 1743 in Stadthagen, Germany. Her life and interactions with European nobility have been documented in various biographical sources, including works by Anna-Franziska von Schweinitz and collections of letters edited by Jürgen Voss.
