Introduction

Takano Kuki was a daimyo in the late Edo period and the 8th lord of the Ayabe domain in Tanba Province. His court rank was Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade, Kawachi-no-kami and Izumo-no-kami.

He was born on July 5, 1808 (Bunka 5), as the eldest son of the 7th daimyo, Kuki Takayoshi. Following his father’s death in the same year, he inherited the position of daimyo and assumed family headship. On November 1, 1815 (Bunsei 2), he received an audience with Shogun Tokugawa Ienari. Subsequently, on December 16 of the same year, he was awarded the court rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade, Kawachi-no-kami.

During his lifetime, he retired on January 24, 1822 (Bunsei 7, leap month), and transferred family headship to his adopted son, Takamotsu. This marked the transfer of actual power over the domain to his heir. His adopted son, Takamotsu, was the second son of Kuki Takayoshi, born in 1801, and lived until 1882.

Kuki Takano died in April 1853, at the age of 54.

Regarding his family background, his father Kuki Takayoshi was born in 1780 and died in 1808. Details about his mother are unknown. His formal wife was the daughter of Tori Tadaki, but further information about his biological mother or other children is not clarified. His children included sons Kuki Takanori and Miwa Hisanori, and a daughter who married a member of the Kitano family.

From this information, Kuki Takano’s life primarily centers on his activities as a domain lord and his family relations.
