Introduction
Douglas Harriman Kennedy, born on March 24, 1967, in Washington, D.C., is an American journalist. He is the tenth child of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy. His name was chosen in honor of W. Averell Harriman, a family friend and former governor of New York. Kennedy was born one year prior to his father's assassination.
Kennedy completed his secondary education at Georgetown Preparatory School. He later attended Brown University, where he pursued higher education.
He married Molly Elizabeth Stark on August 22, 1998, in Nantucket, Massachusetts. The couple has five children.
Kennedy's early career in journalism began with local print media, including The Nantucket Beacon. He subsequently worked for The New York Post as an investigative reporter. During his tenure at the Post, he conducted the first interview with the officer responsible for arresting Timothy McVeigh, the suspect in the Oklahoma City bombing. He also reported on various issues related to healthcare and metropolitan affairs.
In August 1996, Kennedy joined Fox News Channel as a general assignment reporter. He hosts a bi-weekly program titled "Douglas Kennedy's American Stories." His reporting experience includes coverage of the 1996, 2000, and 2004 United States presidential elections, as well as reporting on Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
In 2006, while working as a correspondent for the Fox News program "The Big Story," Kennedy addressed ethical considerations regarding the public broadcast of the last moments of Steve Irwin, the Australian "Crocodile Hunter." He noted that he and his siblings were accustomed to witnessing broadcasts of his father's death, and expressed the view that showing such footage in Irwin's case would be unnecessary and in poor taste.
On November 20, 2012, Kennedy was acquitted of misdemeanor charges of physical harassment and child endangerment. These charges stemmed from an incident on January 7, 2012, at Northern Westchester Hospital, Mount Kisco, New York. The incident involved Kennedy attempting to take his newborn son, Anthony Boru, off the maternity ward for fresh air, which hospital staff claimed was against policy. Nurses involved alleged that Kennedy assaulted them when they tried to prevent the action. Following this event, Kennedy was investigated by child welfare authorities, who in March 2012 found no evidence of child abuse and declared the allegations unfounded.
In 2021, Kennedy and his brother Robert F. Kennedy Jr. publicly supported the parole of Sirhan Sirhan, the individual convicted for the assassination of their father. Sirhan appeared before the parole board on August 27, 2021, but was denied parole by California Governor Gavin Newsom on January 13, 2022.
Kennedy is a member of the Kennedy family, notable for its involvement in American political and social history.
