Joe Biden is the 46th President of the United States, serving from 2021 to 2025. Prior to his presidency, he served as the Vice President under Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. Biden's family has been prominent in American law, education, activism, and politics.

He has ancestral roots primarily from the British Isles, with most of his ancestors originating from Ireland and England, and a smaller portion from France. Among his sixteen great-great-grandparents, ten were born in Ireland, specifically from counties Mayo and Louth. One of his great-great-great-grandfathers was born in Sussex, England, and emigrated to Maryland in the early 19th century.

Biden's immediate family includes two wives and five children. His first wife was Neilia Hunter Biden, born July 28, 1942. They married on August 27, 1966, and lived in Wilmington, Delaware, where Biden was involved in local politics as a member of the New Castle County Council. The couple had three children: Joseph Robinette "Beau" Biden III, Robert Hunter Biden, and Naomi Christina "Amy" Biden.

On December 18, 1972, Neilia and their daughter Naomi died in a car accident when she was driving her children to buy a Christmas tree. The accident injured her sons, Beau and Hunter, who survived and received extensive medical care. Joe Biden was sworn into the U.S. Senate on January 3, 1973, at the hospital where his sons were being treated.

Joe Biden married Jill Tracy Jacobs Biden on June 17, 1977. She was born on June 3, 1951, and was known by her maiden name, Jacobs, and later by her previous married name, Stevenson. They met on a blind date in March 1975. Jill Biden is an educator and has served as the First Lady during Biden's presidential term. Joe Biden's first marriage ended after Neilia's death; Jill Biden remained committed to supporting the family and her career.

Joe Biden has four children from his two marriages. His first-born daughter, Naomi Christina Biden, was born in 1971 and died in December 1972 in the same car accident that killed her mother. His first son, Joseph "Beau" R. Biden III, was born on February 3, 1969, in Wilmington, Delaware. Beau earned degrees from Archmere Academy, the University of Pennsylvania, and Syracuse University College of Law. He served as Delaware's Attorney General from 2007 to 2015, was active in his father's political campaigns, and participated prominently during the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Beau Biden died on May 30, 2015, from brain cancer at age 46.

Hunter Biden was born on February 4, 1970, in Wilmington, Delaware. Like his brother Beau and father Joe, Hunter was injured in the 1972 crash. He attended Georgetown University, graduating with a degree in history in 1992, and later earned a law degree from Yale Law School in 1996. Hunter has worked in the private sector, including as an executive at MBNA America. His career has been the subject of scrutiny due to connections with Ukrainian company Burisma. In 2024, Hunter Biden pled guilty to federal tax charges and faced potential sentencing, which was later superseded by an unconditional pardon issued by President Biden on December 1, 2024.

Naomi "Amy" Biden, born November 8, 1971, died in the same accident as her mother in December 1972.

Ashley Blazer Biden, born June 8, 1981, is the only child of Joe Biden from his second marriage. She attended Wilmington Friends School, a Quaker-affiliated private school.

Throughout his life, Joe Biden experienced personal tragedies including the loss of his first wife and daughter, and the death of his son Beau. His family members have been involved in public service and politics, with some receiving presidential pardons in the final months of Biden’s administration.
