Alexander Cassatt was married to Marie Lois Buchanan Cassatt, the daughter of Edward Young Buchanan, a clergyman and brother of US President James Buchanan. Marie Lois Buchanan Cassatt is also niece of James Buchanan and Stephen Foster, and sister-in-law of the artist Mary Cassatt. James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States, was the son of James Buchanan, Sr., who lived from 1761 to 1821, and served as president from 1857 to 1861.
