Mao Chuxiong (1927–1946) was from Xiangtan, Hunan Province, and the nephew of Mao Zedong. In 1928, he and his mother were imprisoned by the Kuomintang, but later he was released thanks to the efforts of his grandmother, Zhou Chenxuan. To ensure Mao Chuxiong received a good education, his grandmother sent him to Changsha City No. 13 Public Elementary School. In 1945, Mao Chuxiong sought out Wang Zhen, hoping to join the army and go to Yan'an. After verifying his identity, Wang Zhen took him to Yan'an, where he was assigned to the Instruction Regiment. Despite being physically weak, he displayed resilience in the army, striving to contribute. In 1946, the Kuomintang broke the ceasefire agreement and started attacking the Central Plains Liberation Area. To promote peace negotiations, Wang Zhen decided to send Mao Chuxiong as a guard to Xian for talks with the team. At the same time, Wang Zhen instructed that Mao Chuxiong be sent back to Yan'an. Unfortunately, on the way to Xian, Mao Chuxiong and his accompanying personnel were intercepted by the forces of Hu Zongnan and secretly executed at the age of 19.
