Introduction

Joe Biden is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 46th president of the United States from 2021 to 2025. Before his presidency, he served as the vice president under Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. Biden's family has roots primarily in the British Isles, with most ancestors originating from Ireland and England, and a smaller number from France. Among his sixteen great-great-grandparents, ten were born in Ireland, specifically from counties Mayo and Louth. One great-great-great-grandfather was born in Sussex, England, and emigrated to Maryland by 1820.

Biden's immediate family has been part of the U.S. presidential family during his terms in office, with the first family from 2021 to 2025 and the second family from 2009 to 2017.

Biden married twice. His first wife was Neilia Hunter Biden, born July 28, 1942. They married on August 27, 1966, and moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where Biden was on the New Castle County Council. Together, they had three children: Naomi Christina "Amy," Joseph "Beau" R. Biden III, and Robert Hunter Biden. Neilia played a significant role in Biden's early political campaigns, notably helping him campaign to unseat U.S. Senator J. Caleb Boggs. Tragedy struck on December 18, 1972, when Neilia and their daughter Naomi were killed in a car accident involving a tractor-trailer. Biden's two sons, Beau and Hunter, survived with severe injuries. Biden was sworn into the U.S. Senate on January 3, 1973, at the hospital where his sons were being treated.

He met Jill Tracy Jacobs in March 1975 on a blind date, and the couple married on June 17, 1977, at the United Nations Chapel in New York City. Jill Biden is the second and current wife of Joe Biden.

Joe Biden has four children from two marriages. His first child, Naomi Christina Biden, died in the 1972 car accident. His first son, Joseph "Beau" R. Biden III, was born on February 3, 1969, in Wilmington. Beau was a graduate of Archmere Academy, the University of Pennsylvania, and Syracuse University College of Law. He served at the U.S. Department of Justice and was elected Delaware Attorney General in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. Beau married Hallie Olivere in 2002. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013 and died from the disease on May 30, 2015, at age 46. His funeral was held in Wilmington, Delaware.

Hunter Biden, born Robert Hunter Biden on February 4, 1970, also in Wilmington, survived the 1972 crash. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1992, attended Georgetown Law for one year, then transferred to Yale Law School, graduating in 1996. Hunter married Kathleen Buhle in 1993, with whom he has three children; they divorced in 2017. In 2019, he married Melissa Cohen. Hunter held an executive role at MBNA America, a bank holding company, and during the 2020 election, he faced scrutiny over his connections with Ukrainian energy company Burisma. In September 2024, Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to federal tax charges, admitting to evading $1.4 million from 2016 to 2019. On December 1, 2024, President Biden issued a full pardon for Hunter Biden covering all federal offenses from January 1, 2014, to December 1, 2024.

Joe Biden's youngest child is Ashley Blazer Biden, born June 8, 1981. She is the only child from Joe Biden's second marriage to Jill Biden. Ashley attended Wilmington Friends School and is involved in social activism and public service.

Throughout his life, Joe Biden's family experienced multiple tragedies and public service commitments, with his children playing significant roles in his personal and political life.
