Introduction
Joe Biden is the 46th President of the United States, serving from 2021 to 2025. Prior to his presidency, he served as the Vice President under Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. Biden's family has a background predominantly from the British Isles, with most ancestors originating from Ireland and England, and a smaller number from France. Out of his sixteen great-great-grandparents, ten were born in Ireland, specifically from Counties Mayo and Louth. Additionally, one of his great-great-great-grandfathers was born in Sussex, England, and emigrated to Maryland by 1820.
Biden's immediate family includes his wives and children. His first wife was Neilia Hunter Biden, born on July 28, 1942. They married on August 27, 1966, and moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where Biden was involved on the New Castle County Council. They had three children together: Joseph Robinette "Beau" Biden III, Robert Hunter Biden, and Naomi Christina "Amy" Biden. Neilia was considered by the media as the "brains" behind Biden’s successful Senate campaign. On December 18, 1972, Neilia and her daughter Naomi died in a car accident involving a tractor-trailer while Neilia was driving to buy a Christmas tree. Biden was sworn into the Senate on January 3, 1973, at the hospital where his children were receiving treatment.
Joe Biden later married Jill Tracy Jacobs in 1977. She was born on June 3, 1951, and they met on a blind date in March 1975. Their wedding took place at the United Nations Chapel in New York City, four and a half years after the death of Biden’s first wife and daughter. Jill Biden is an educator and holds the position of the Second Lady of the United States during Biden's vice presidency and the First Lady during his presidency.
Biden has four children across his two marriages. His first child, Naomi Christina Biden, died along with her mother in 1972. His first son, Joseph "Beau" R. Biden III, was born on February 3, 1969, in Wilmington, Delaware. Beau graduated from Archmere Academy and the University of Pennsylvania in 1991, and from Syracuse University College of Law. He worked at the U.S. Department of Justice and was elected Delaware Attorney General in 2006, being reelected in 2010. Beau was involved in Biden’s 2008 vice-presidential campaign and spoke publicly about his family’s tragedies. He married Hallie Olivere in 2002. Beau Biden was diagnosed with brain cancer and died on May 30, 2015, at age 46.
Hunter Biden, born Robert Hunter Biden on February 4, 1970, in Wilmington, also survived the 1972 accident. He attended Archmere Academy, Georgetown University, and Yale Law School. Hunter worked at MBNA America, a bank holding company, where he rose to an executive vice-presidential role. His business activities and international connections have been scrutinized, especially relating to his work with Burisma in Ukraine. In September 2024, he pleaded guilty to federal tax charges and faced potential sentencing in December 2024; however, President Biden issued a full pardon for Hunter on December 1, 2024, covering federal offenses from 2014 to 2024.
Joe Biden’s daughter from his second marriage is Ashley Blazer Biden, born June 8, 1981. She attended Wilmington Friends School. The only child from Biden’s second marriage, Ashley has been involved in social activism and public service.
Naomi "Amy" Biden was born on November 8, 1971, and died at about one year old in the 1972 car accident.
