Introduction
George Arundel Stewart, who died in 1875, was the son of Henrietta Ponsonby, Countess of Bessborough. Henrietta Ponsonby was a British aristocrat and the wife of Frederick Ponsonby, 3rd Earl of Bessborough, and was also the younger sister of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. Lady Caroline Lamb, an English writer and daughter of Henrietta Ponsonby, was the wife of William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, a British politician who lived from 1779 to 1848.
