Introduction
This scholar enrolled in the Department of English at Xi'an International Studies University in 1978 and obtained a bachelor's degree. Subsequently, in 1987, he went to the University of Hawaii in the United States to pursue a master's degree in American history, and in 1996, he earned a Ph.D. in American diplomatic history from Emory University. Throughout his academic career, he has taught at Georgia Perimeter College and Emory University in the United States, receiving tenure in 2002.
His research areas include China-U.S. relations, Chinese political development, and Cross-Strait relations. Regarding China-U.S. relations, he has long focused on the political interactions between the two countries, proposing theories on their highly interdependent economies and pointing out that trade frictions impact both sides. In terms of Chinese political development, he has been concerned with China's democratization process and social governance, advocating for the integration of Marxist theory with China's realities. Regarding Cross-Strait relations, he has studied the impact of globalization and China's rise on China’s political and social development.
In international exchanges, since serving as the director of the China Program at the Carter Center in 2005, he has led efforts to establish a Sino-American academic cooperation network, promoting over 20 joint research projects. Between 2005 and 2019, he accompanied President Carter on multiple visits to China and participated in the development of high-level China-U.S. dialogue mechanisms. In 2017, he delivered a special report on "Chinese Social Governance and Modernization" at the School of Philosophy and Public Administration, and in 2022, he live-streamed a discussion on the Chinese role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict via the Green Media Platform.
In publishing, he primarily edited the series "Contemporary Chinese Rural Governance and Electoral Observation" (2000s), co-published "Obama: He Will Change America" (2008), and participated in founding the quarterly "21st Century International Review," serving as its executive editor.
In public speaking, he is renowned for his scholarly yet humorous style. He has delivered speeches at the Party School of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China on the evaluation system of the "Chinese Model" (2010), at Renmin University of China on "The Direction of China-U.S. Relations" (2015), and at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on "The New Global Order" (2018). His latest views in 2020 focused on risk management amid the strategic competition between China and the U.S.
