Introduction
Sir Thomas Mostyn, 4th Baronet (26 April 1704 – 1758), was a British landowner and politician associated with Mostyn, Flintshire. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons from 1734 to 1758.
**Early Life**
Born as the eldest son of Sir Roger Mostyn, 3rd Baronet, of Mostyn and Leighton, Thomas Mostyn's mother was Essex Finch, daughter of Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham. He attended Westminster School in 1716 and later matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, on 13 October 1720, at the age of 16. Between October 1723 and May 1728, he traveled extensively across Europe. His interests included literature, and he was known for collecting books and manuscripts. Around 1733, he married Sarah Western, daughter of Robert Western of St Peters Cornhill, London, and Rivenhall, Essex.
**Career**
Mostyn aligned with the Hanoverian Tory faction and demonstrated strong support for the Protestant succession. In 1727, he played a role in local politics by compelling the Jacobite sheriff of Flintshire to proclaim King George II. He was active in local Tory preparations for the 1734 British general election and was elected as MP for Flintshire, succeeding his father in Parliament. Throughout his tenure, he maintained a voting record that opposed the policies of the Administration.
On 8 May 1739, Mostyn inherited the baronetcy from his father, becoming the 4th Baronet. Prior to the 1741 general election, he agreed to stand down, partly due to the financial burden from his previous campaign, which had cost him over £2,000. Despite this, he returned to Parliament as MP for Flintshire in the 1747 election and was returned unopposed again in 1754.
**Death and Legacy**
Sir Thomas Mostyn died on 24 March 1758. He was survived by his wife, Sarah, who lived until 1783. He fathered four sons and five daughters. His eldest son, Roger Mostyn, succeeded him as the 5th Baronet. One of his daughters, Anne Mostyn, married Thomas Pennant of Downing Hall in 1777; Pennant was a noted naturalist and traveler.
