Introduction
Henrietta Butler, Viscountess Galmoye (née Lady Henrietta FitzJames; 1667 – 3 April 1730), was the illegitimate daughter of James Stuart, Duke of York, who later became King James II of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Her mother was Arabella Churchill, sister of the first Duke of Marlborough. Henrietta was raised as a Roman Catholic.
She was the sister of James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick. In 1683, she married Henry Waldegrave, who was appointed the 1st Baron Waldegrave following the accession of King James II. Henrietta and Henry had two children: Arabella Waldegrave and James Waldegrave, who became the 1st Earl Waldegrave.
Henrietta accompanied her father and his wife during their exile, residing for some years at Saint-Germain-en-Laye in France. Following the death of her husband in 1689, she was involved in a relationship with Mark Talbot, an Irish soldier.
On 3 April 1695, she married Piers Butler, 3rd Viscount Galmoye. He was created Earl of Newcastle in the Jacobite Peerage in 1692. This marriage was childless. Henrietta Butler died in 1730 and was buried in Navestock.
