Introduction

Lord Charles Arthur Francis Cavendish was born on 29 August 1905 at Holker Hall in Lancashire. He was the second son of Victor Cavendish, who became the 9th Duke of Devonshire, and Lady Evelyn Petty-FitzMaurice. At the time of his birth, his father was serving as Member of Parliament for West Derbyshire. Lady Evelyn was the daughter of Henry Petty-FitzMaurice, the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, who held positions as Viceroy of India and Governor General of Canada.

In 1908, his father inherited the Dukedom of Devonshire from his uncle, and the family residences included Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, Lismore Castle in Ireland, and Devonshire House in Mayfair. Cavendish was educated at St Cyprian's School in Eastbourne, Eton College, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He served in the Royal Tank Regiment, attaining the rank of Lieutenant.

In 1927, Cavendish met American dancer and actress Adele Astaire in London, on the closing night of her theatrical show "Funny Face." During this period, he worked for J.P. Morgan & Co. in New York City. The couple's courtship culminated in a proposal made by Adele at the 21 Club in Manhattan. They were married in 1932 at Chatsworth House. Their marriage produced three children: a daughter born in 1933 and twin sons born in 1935; however, all three children died shortly after birth.

The Cavendish couple resided at Lismore Castle in County Waterford, Ireland, which was a wedding gift from Lord Charles's father, the 9th Duke of Devonshire. Lord Charles Cavendish died there on 23 March 1944 at the age of 38 due to long-term acute alcoholism. He was interred at Lismore Cathedral.

According to the terms of his will, Lismore Castle was to be inherited by his nephew, Lord Andrew Cavendish (later the 11th Duke of Devonshire), in the event that Adele remarried. Adele did remarry in 1947.
