Introduction

Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, Earl of Lincoln, was born on 5 November 1750. He was a British politician and a member of the House of Commons from 1772 until his death in 1778. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Aldborough starting in 1772, and later represented Nottinghamshire from 1774.

He was the second son of the 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne. In 1752, following the death of his elder brother, Pelham-Clinton became the heir to his father. His education included attendance at Eton College, a prestigious school in England.

During his Grand Tour to Italy, in December 1771, Pelham-Clinton experienced a significant gambling loss in Florence, amounting to 12,000 Pounds Sterling, which he lost to the Zannowich Brothers.

In 1774, he inherited the family residence located at 22 Arlington Street in St. James's, a district within the City of Westminster in central London. He resided there until his death.

On 21 May 1775, Pelham-Clinton married Frances Seymour-Conway, who was born on 4 December 1751 and died on 11 November 1820. She was the daughter of the 1st Marquess of Hertford. The couple had two children: Lady Catherine Pelham-Clinton, born on 6 April 1776, who married the 3rd Earl of Radnor on 2 October 1800 and had children; and Henry Pelham-Clinton, Earl of Lincoln, born on 23 December 1777, who died young on 23 September 1779.

His father, the duke, as Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, appointed Pelham-Clinton as Lieutenant-Colonel of the Nottinghamshire Militia in 1775, coinciding with the militia's reformation.

Henry Pelham-Clinton died on 18 October 1778 at the age of 28, predeceasing his father. Subsequently, his only son also died shortly after, on 23 September 1779. The dukedom was inherited by his younger brother Thomas upon the eventual death of the 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne in 1794.
