Introduction
Algernon Henry Strutt, 3rd Baron Belper, was born on 6 May 1883 and deceased on 20 May 1956. He held the title of 3rd Baron Belper from 26 July 1914 until his death in 1956.
He enlisted in the British Army in August 1908, attaining the rank of Lieutenant in the 2nd Life Guards. During World War I, he served with the 13th Tank Battalion from its formation until 31 July 1918. He also held the position of Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire.
Strutt was the son of Henry Strutt, 2nd Baron Belper, and Lady Margaret Coke. On 26 April 1911, he married Eva Isabel Marion Bruce, daughter of Major Henry Bruce, 2nd Baron Aberdare, and Constance Beckett, at St. Margaret's, Westminster. The marriage ended in divorce in 1922.
Together, Algernon Henry Strutt and Eva Bruce had three children:
- Alexander Ronald George Strutt (1912–1999), who became the 4th Baron Belper and married Zara Sophie Kathleen Mary Mainwaring on 15 November 1940; they divorced in 1949.
- Michael Strutt (1914–1942), who married Arielle Frazer on 15 July 1939; he was killed in a flying accident on active service alongside Prince George, Duke of Kent.
- Lavinia Mary Strutt (1916–1995), who married Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk, on 27 January 1937.
Strutt's second marriage was to Angela Mariota Tollemache on 12 July 1923, daughter of Alfred Tollemache and Alice Head. They had two children:
- Peter Algernon Strutt (1924–2007), married Gay Mary Fison on 10 January 1953; he served with the Coldstream Guards during World War II and was awarded the Military Cross in 1945.
- Desmond Rupert Strutt (1926–1993), who married Jean Felicity Erskine on 10 July 1951 and later married Lucy Gwendolen Stirling-Home-Drummond-Moray on 11 July 1964.
