Introduction
Elizabeth Harrison Walker was born on February 21, 1897, in Indiana. She was the third and youngest child of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States, and his second wife, Mary Dimmick Harrison. She was the only child of her father and Mary Harrison. Her father, Benjamin Harrison, died in 1901 when Elizabeth was four years old.
In 1919, she graduated from New York University School of Law and was subsequently admitted to the bar in both Indiana and New York. In 1916, Elizabeth participated in an Emergency Services Corps camp held in New Jersey. The camp was organized amid growing tensions in Europe and aimed at training women to contribute more effectively to the war effort. The activities at the camp included rifle shooting, horseback riding, flag signaling, hiking for extended distances, and first aid training. The program was designed for preparedness rather than trench combat.
On April 6, 1921, Elizabeth Harrison married James Blaine Walker, who was born on January 20, 1889, and died on January 15, 1978. James Blaine Walker was a grandnephew of James G. Blaine, who served as Secretary of State. He was also a member of her father's cabinet. Elizabeth and James Walker had two children: Benjamin Harrison Walker, born in 1921 and died in 1995, and Jane Harrison Garfield, née Walker, born in 1929 and died in 2020.
Her daughter Jane Walker married Newell Garfield, a grandson of James Rudolph Garfield, who served as U.S. Secretary of Interior, and a great-grandson of President James A. Garfield. Jane and Newell Garfield had one daughter named Eliza and a granddaughter named Sirjana. Her son Benjamin Walker married Elizabeth Sillcocks Walker and had two sons.
Elizabeth Harrison Walker was the founder and publisher of "Cues on the News," an investment newsletter targeted at women. She passed away from natural causes on December 25, 1955, at the age of 58. At the time of her death, she was the last surviving child of Benjamin Harrison.
