Introduction
George Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret (July 1667 – 22 September 1695), was an English nobleman and peer during the late 17th century. He was the son of Sir Philip Carteret (died 1672) and Lady Jemima Montagu, daughter of Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich. His paternal grandfather was Vice Admiral Sir George Carteret, 1st Baronet (died 1680), a notable figure in British naval history.
Born in July 1667, George Carteret was orphaned at the age of five following the death of his father. Afterward, he was raised by his grandmother, Elizabeth de Carteret, who was a daughter of Philippe de Carteret II, 3rd Seigneur de Sark. Elizabeth de Carteret was recognized by Samuel Pepys for her kindness, whom he described as "the most kind lady in the world."
In 1681, at the age of fourteen, Carteret was elevated to the peerage as Baron Carteret of Hawnes by King Charles II. This honor was granted in recognition of his late grandfather's loyalty to the House of Stuart, particularly during the English Civil Wars and following the Restoration of the monarchy.
George Carteret married Lady Grace Granville, daughter of John Granville, 1st Earl of Bath. Through this marriage, he became the father of John Carteret, who succeeded as the 2nd Earl Granville and the 2nd Baron Carteret.
Carteret's death occurred in 1695 at the age of 26. His widow, Lady Grace Granville, survived him by approximately fifty years. In 1715, she was created Countess Granville, a peerage elevated from her prior titles.
