Introduction
Henry Giles Alington was born on 25 July 1837 in Candlesby, Lincolnshire. He was the son of Reverend John Alington and Charlotte Bellingham. His family had ecclesiastical and landed gentry roots, including a lineage associated with the Alington family of Little Barford Manor House in St Neots, Huntingdonshire, and descended from the Alingtons of Horseheath, an ancient family from Cambridgeshire. This family also held the title of Barons Alington.
Alington received his education at Rugby School before attending Magdalen College, Oxford. During his time at Oxford, he participated in first-class cricket, making two appearances in 1859. His matches included one against the Marylebone Cricket Club and another in The University Match against Cambridge University. In these games, he scored a total of 12 runs.
Following his education, Alington became an Anglican priest and served as an Inspector of Schools. He maintained a connection to his place of birth throughout his life and died there on 2 December 1928.
In his personal life, Henry Alington was married to Jane Margaret Booth, who passed away in 1910. They had a son, Cyril Alington, who gained recognition as an educationalist, scholar, cleric, and author. Henry also had familial connections to cricket through his brother Herbert Alington and his brother-in-law Clement Booth, both of whom were also first-class cricketers.
