George Milles, 4th Baron Sondes

George John Milles, 4th Baron Sondes, was born on 20 January 1794. He was the second son of Lewis Watson, 2nd Baron Sondes, and his wife, Mary Milles. Prior to inheriting the peerage, he was styled Hon. George Watson until 1820 and then Hon. George Milles from 1820 to 1836.

In 1811, he matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, on 17 October. Early military service included purchasing a cornetcy in the Royal Horse Guards on 15 December 1812. Subsequently, he purchased a lieutenancy on 24 March 1814 and participated in the Battle of Waterloo during the Napoleonic Wars. He retired from military service in May 1816.

In accordance with the will of his grandfather, Richard Milles, he changed his surname to Milles on 27 December 1820. He inherited the estate of the Milles family at North Elmham in Norfolk. His marriage was to Eleanor Knatchbull, the fifth daughter of Sir Edward Knatchbull, 8th Baronet.

His military career continued with the Norfolk Yeomanry Cavalry, where he was commissioned as a captain on 27 June 1826. He served as High Sheriff of Norfolk in 1830. On 31 March 1831, he was promoted to the rank of major in the Norfolk Yeomanry. He succeeded his brother to the peerage on 14 March 1836 and therefore became the 4th Baron Sondes.

Later that year, on 20 September 1836, he received a commission as a captain in the East Kent Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry and resigned from the Norfolk Yeomanry in April 1838. In June 1838, he was present to give homage in person at the coronation of Queen Victoria.

Beyond his military and peerage duties, Sondes was a shareholder in the Faversham Public Rooms Company, which was dissolved in 1871. He died on 17 December 1874, and his eldest son, George Milles, succeeded him as the 1st Earl Sondes.
