Introduction

Emich Carl, Prince of Leiningen, was born on 27 September 1763 at Dürckheim. He was the fourth child and only son of Carl Friedrich Wilhelm, Count of Leiningen-Dagsburg-Hartenburg, and his wife, Countess Christiane Wilhelmine Luise of Solms-Rödelheim und Assenheim (1736–1803). On 3 July 1779, his father was elevated to the status of Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, and Emich Carl became Hereditary Prince of Leiningen. He succeeded his father as the second Prince of Leiningen on 9 January 1807.

In 1787, Emich Carl married Countess Henriette Sophie of Reuss-Ebersdorf (1767–1801). She was the youngest daughter of Heinrich XXIV, Count of Reuss-Ebersdorf, and Countess Karoline Ernestine of Erbach-Schönberg. The marriage produced one child, Prince Friedrich Karl Heinrich Ludwig of Leiningen, born on 1 March 1793. The child died young, on 22 February 1800, within the lifetime of his mother.

Following the death of his first wife, Emich Carl married Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld on 21 December 1803. She was the fourth daughter of Francis, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and Countess Augusta Reuss of Ebersdorf. She was also a niece of Emich Carl's late wife. Emich Carl and Princess Victoria had two additional children: Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Emich (born 12 September 1804, died 13 November 1856) and Princess Anna Feodora Auguste Charlotte Wilhelmine of Leiningen (born 7 December 1807, died 23 September 1872). Carl Friedrich Wilhelm succeeded Emich Carl as the third Prince of Leiningen. He married Countess Maria von Klebelsberg-Thumburg in 1829 and had issue. Princess Anna married Ernst I, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, in 1828, and had children.

Emich Carl died at Amorbach on 4 July 1814. His succession was taken over by his surviving son, Carl Friedrich Wilhelm.

After Emich Carl's death, his widow, Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, the fourth son of King George III of the United Kingdom. They married in 1818, and their daughter, Princess Victoria of Kent, later became Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.

His ancestry includes connections to several German noble families, notably the House of Leiningen, and through his marriage to Princess Victoria, ties to the Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld family.
