Zhu Yangguang

Zhu Yangguang was born in Zhu Dazhuang Village, Datun Subdistrict, Pei County, Jiangsu Province. His father, Zhu Gengde, and mother, Zhou Ruixia, are both ordinary farmers, and the family has always had a relatively difficult economic situation. Zhu Yangguang is the third child in the family, living with his older brothers Zhu Yangzhu and Zhu Yanglong. The three brothers have participated in farm work from a young age to help sustain the family.

Zhu Yangzhu, his eldest brother, began herding sheep at the age of 8, while still maintaining his studies, demonstrating a diligent and hardworking spirit. His brother’s example in learning had a positive influence on Zhu Yangguang’s growth. Academically, Zhu Yangguang obtained a master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Soochow University in 2015. His older brother Zhu Yanglong is also pursuing a master's degree at Harbin Institute of Technology, forming a "brother duo" of graduates.

During Zhu Yangguang’s studies, his family’s support played a crucial role. When Zhu Yangzhu was studying at the National Defense Science and Technology University, he saved his living allowances to support his younger brother’s academic development. Zhu Yangguang was deeply inspired by his brother’s scientific research spirit, which became a driving force for his own growth.

On September 30, 2023, the Mid-Autumn Festival, Zhu Yangguang drove his car to bring his 90-year-old grandmother back to Pei County for a reunion. During this time, the whole Zhu family stayed in touch with their brother Zhu Yangzhu, who was executing the Shenzhou-16 mission, via phone. The family shared photos of their new home environment and the bountiful harvest. Zhu’s father, Zhu Gengde, specially prepared the fried shredded potatoes and flatbread with vegetables that his eldest son liked. The entire family raised glasses together, wishing the astronaut a safe and successful mission.

Zhu Yangguang’s family background and personal experience reflect the mutual support and collective effort among family members, while also showcasing the hard work and perseverance of teenagers growing up in a rural household.
