Introduction

David James Christian Faber was born on July 7, 1961. He is a British schoolmaster and a former Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Conservative Party. Faber did not seek re-election in the 2001 general election and subsequently pursued a career as an author. In 2010, he was appointed head master of Summer Fields School in Oxford.

Faber comes from a distinguished political and aristocratic family. His parents are Julian Faber and Lady Caroline Faber. His maternal grandfather was Harold Macmillan (1894–1986), who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the 1950s. His maternal grandmother was Lady Dorothy Cavendish, a descendant of three Prime Ministers: the 4th Duke of Devonshire (1756–1757), the 2nd Earl of Shelburne (1782–1783), and the 3rd Duke of Portland (1783 and 1807–1809). His family connections extend to Lord Hartington, a great-great-great-granduncle, and Victor Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire, his great-grandfather, who was also involved in politics.

Faber's maternal relatives also include Andrew Cavendish, 11th Duke of Devonshire, who was married to Deborah Mitford, and William Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington, who was married to Kathleen Kennedy, sister of U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy. His uncle, Maurice Macmillan, was a significant figure in Edward Heath's government during the 1970s.

Faber attended Summer Fields School in Summertown, then Eton College, and later studied at Balliol College, Oxford. During his time at Oxford, he was a member of the Bullingdon Club, a historically exclusive and controversial dining club known for its wealthy membership and infamous conduct, including instances of vandalism.

His early political career included an unsuccessful attempt to enter Parliament in 1987, standing for the seat of Stockton North, where he was defeated by Labour's Frank Cook. Faber has also worked in marketing and served as a political assistant to Jeffrey Archer before winning a seat in the House of Commons in 1992 as the MP for Westbury.

During his parliamentary career, Faber served as parliamentary private secretary to the Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1994 to 1996 and then to the Secretary of State for Health from 1996 to 1997. Following the Conservative Party's defeat in the 1997 general election, he became the party's front bench spokesperson on Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs until 1998. Faber served on several parliamentary committees, including the Social Security Committee (1992–1997), the Culture, Media and Sport Committee (1998–2001), and the Public Accounts Committee (2000–2001).

He chose not to stand for re-election in 2001 and was succeeded by Andrew Murrison. After leaving Parliament, Faber focused on writing. His 2005 book, "Speaking for England: Leo, Julian and John Amery," examined the history of his family members, including Julian Amery, his uncle by marriage, and Julian’s father Leo and brother John, both of whom were involved in WWII and its aftermath.

In 2009, Faber was appointed head of Summer Fields School, commencing the role in September 2010.

Faber was married twice. His first wife was Sally Gilbert, a television weather presenter, with whom he had one son; they later divorced, with Faber citing James Hewitt as a co-respondent. He married his second wife, Sophie Amanda Hedley, and they have two daughters.

He has also been involved in cricket administration as a past committee member of the Marylebone Cricket Club, managing an MCC tour of Canada in 2001. Faber is a member of the private members' club White's.

His published books include *Munich: The 1938 Appeasement Crisis* (2008) and *Speaking for England: Leo, Julian and John Amery* (2005).
