Introduction
Liu Wenbing, born in the late Qing Dynasty, whose exact birth date is unknown, died in 1907. According to historical records, he took part in the imperial examinations early in life and passed as a xiucai (commended scholar), but was disqualified due to his impoverished background. Afterwards, he became a private village school teacher, continuing his engagement in education. Later, he abandoned scholarly pursuits to focus solely on farming. During his time in agriculture, Liu Wenbing maintained the demeanor of a literati; his neighbors referred to him as the “mud-footed scholar.”
Liu Wenbing had a significant influence on the upbringing of his son, Liu Bocheng. From a young age, he employed strict educational methods, requiring his son to read the Liu family genealogy at age four or five. By six, Liu Bocheng was attending private school, under his father's direct supervision. Once, Liu Bocheng was reprimanded by his father for being playful and neglecting studies. This experience motivated him to study diligently. Liu Wenbing often educated his children through letters, expressing his hopes and principles through writing, and shaping Liu Bocheng's character to be upright and modest.
Regarding Liu Wenbing’s name, his original name was “Ming,” taken from the “Ming” generation in the family genealogy’s preface, inspired by the phrase “bright and luminous” from Xunzi’s “Encouragement to Study.” Later, he changed his name to “Bocheng,” meaning that the eldest son inherits the family’s legacy, reflecting the expectations of his elders.
In 1907, Liu Wenbing died of lung disease. His passing had a profound impact on his family, plunging them into economic hardship. His son, Liu Bocheng, was forced to halt his studies due to the family’s circumstances. Before his death, Liu Wenbing comforted his family, saying, “I don’t have land in Nanzhuang or Beizhuang, only a brush and ink for you.” His dedication to education and his emphasis on learning had a lasting influence on Liu Bocheng’s growth and future.
