Introduction
Tatsuo Fukuda (福田達夫, Fukuda Tatsuo) was born on March 5, 1967, in Tokyo, Japan. He is a Japanese politician currently serving as the chairman of the General Council of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). He is also a member of the House of Representatives representing the LDP.
Fukuda comes from a family with a political background. He is the son of Yasuo Fukuda, a former Prime Minister of Japan, and the grandson of Takeo Fukuda, also a former Prime Minister.
For his education, Tatsuo Fukuda graduated from Keio University. He furthered his studies at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
Professionally, Fukuda spent approximately ten years working at Mitsubishi Corporation. Subsequently, he served as a secretary for his father, Yasuo Fukuda, when Yasuo was the chief cabinet secretary. When Yasuo Fukuda became Prime Minister in 2007, Tatsuo Fukuda continued his role as his secretary.
In the political sphere, Fukuda was elected to the House of Representatives in the 2012 General Election, representing Gunma 4th District. He is affiliated with the Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai, which is recognized as the largest faction within the LDP.
Following Fumio Kishida's election as leader of the LDP in 2021, Kishida appointed Fukuda as chairman of the party's General Council. In 2022, after the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Fukuda publicly addressed allegations regarding connections between the Unification Church and party members. He dismissed these concerns, stating, "frankly speaking, I don’t really know what the problem is," and affirmed that he had no connections with the organization.
