Introduction
Colonel Sir Wellington Patrick Manvers Chetwynd-Talbot was born on 12 December 1817 and died on 23 September 1898. He was a member of the British Army and held the ceremonial position of Serjeant at Arms of the House of Lords from 1858 until his death.
He was the son of Charles Chetwynd-Talbot, the 2nd Earl Talbot, and Frances Thomasine Lambart. Chetwynd-Talbot received his education at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst.
His military career commenced with a commission as an ensign in the 35th (Royal Sussex) Regiment of Foot on 19 December 1836. Subsequently, he purchased a lieutenancy in the 7th Regiment of Foot on 15 September 1837, and in 1842, he purchased a captaincy in the same regiment. Between 1844 and 1845, he served as comptroller of the household to Lord Heytesbury, who was the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland at that time.
In 1846, his father, then serving as Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire, commissioned him as a major in the King's Own (1st Staffordshire) Militia on 4 April. Chetwynd-Talbot was promoted to lieutenant-colonel on 4 March 1853. During the Crimean War, he commanded the regiment when it was embodied for garrison duty in the Ionian Islands.
In 1852, he served as private secretary to his future father-in-law, Lord Derby, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. On 26 April 1873, he resigned his commission as lieutenant-colonel and was appointed as honorary colonel of the militia regiment.
He married Lady Emma Charlotte Stanley on 11 October 1860. She was the daughter of Edward Smith-Stanley, the 14th Earl of Derby, and Honorable Emma Bootle-Wilbraham. The couple had eight children.
In 1897, Chetwynd-Talbot was invested as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, a British order of chivalry.
