Yoshiko Ikeda

Akiko Ikeda (born June 8, 1870 (Meiji 3), died January 19, 1920) was a Japanese noblewoman of imperial and aristocratic descent and the second wife of Marquis Ikeda Norizada. She was the third daughter of Prince Asaka Nunihiko and her mother was Yayoi Izumi. Empress Kōjun was her niece. Emperor Akihito (former Emperor Heisei) and Prince Michinomiya Higashikuninomiya are her great-nephews. During her time as a member of the imperial family, she was known as Princess Akiko.

Life:

On December 24, 1890 (Meiji 23), she married Norizada Ikeda, heir of Marquis Akira Ikeda, and bore him three sons and two daughters. She was widowed on June 1, 1909, upon the death of her husband.

In 1917 (Taisho 6), her eldest son, Michiharu Ikeda (born 1895), passed away. On January 18, 1920 (Taisho 9), her eldest son died prematurely from the Spanish flu, and the following day, January 19, 1920, Akiko herself passed away. Her death was mourned by many members of the imperial family.

Additionally, the 4th Princess, Atsuko, and her husband Takemasa Ikeda, become related to Prince Asaka Nunihiko through Akiko’s lineage, making them great-grandchildren of Prince Asaka Nunihiko.

Family Relations:

Her siblings include her full brother, Prince Kunihiko of Kuni. Her niece was Empress Kōjun.

Her father-in-law was Ikeda Akira, but there are no records regarding her mother-in-law.

Her husband was Norizada Ikeda (1867–1909), and they had several children, including adopted and biological children.
