Introduction
Thomas Fermor, 1st Earl of Pomfret (1698 – 8 July 1753), was an English nobleman and courtier. He was the only son of William Fermor, 1st Baron Leominster, and Lady Sophia Osborne, his third wife. Fermor succeeded to his father's barony in 1711 upon his father's death, becoming the 2nd Baron Leominster. The earldom of Pomfret was created for him on 27 December 1721, with the title derived from Pontefract, Yorkshire. He was appointed a Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1725.
In September 1727, Fermor was appointed master of the horse to Caroline, queen consort to King George II, who had recently ascended to the throne. Fermor's wife was also appointed as one of Caroline's ladies of the bedchamber. Following the death of Queen Caroline in November 1737, Fermor and his wife undertook a three-year tour of France and Italy in September 1738. Their travels included visits to Florence, Bologna, Venice, Augsburg, Frankfurt, and Brussels.
Fermor married Henrietta Louisa Jeffreys on 14 July 1720. She was the only surviving child of John Jeffreys, 2nd Baron Jeffreys of Wem, and granddaughter of George Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys. The marriage produced four sons and six daughters. Their children included George Fermor, who succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Pomfret (1722–1785), and several daughters who married into notable families: Lady Charlotte Fermor (1725–1813), wife of Hon. William Finch and later governess to the children of King George III; Lady Sophia Frances Fermor (died 1745), wife of John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville; Lady Juliana Fermor (1729–1801), who married Thomas Penn; and Lady Anne Fermor (1733–1769), wife of Thomas Dawson, 1st Viscount Cremorne.
