Introduction
Archibald Primrose, Lord Dalmeny (2 October 1809 – 23 January 1851), was a British politician affiliated with the Whig party.
**Early Life**
He was born on 2 October 1809 as the eldest son and heir apparent of Archibald Primrose, 4th Earl of Rosebery (1783–1868), and Harriett Bouverie. He did not live to inherit the earldom. His education was completed at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge.
**Political Career**
Dalmeny demonstrated support for the Reform Act of 1832. Following the passage of this legislation, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) representing Stirling Burghs in the 1832 general election. He held this seat during the subsequent period and served as a Civil Lord of the Admiralty from 25 April 1835 until 1841, a tenure that ended with the fall of the Melbourne government. Throughout his parliamentary career, he opposed the implementation of both the secret ballot and the income tax. He chose not to contest his parliamentary seat in the 1847 election and subsequently left Parliament.
**Personal Life**
On 20 September 1843, Dalmeny married Lady Catherine Lucy Wilhelmina Stanhope (1819–1901), a historian and the daughter of Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl Stanhope. They had four children:
- Lady Mary Catherine Constance Primrose (1844–1935), who married Henry Walter Hope-Scott in 1885.
- Hon. Constance Evelyn Primrose (1846–1939), who married Henry Wyndham, 2nd Baron Leconfield, in 1867.
- Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847–1929), who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1894 to 1895. In 1878, he married Hannah de Rothschild, the only child and heiress of banker Mayer Amschel de Rothschild.
- Everard Henry Primrose (1848–1885), a Colonel in the Grenadier Guards and military attaché in Vienna.
**Death and Aftermath**
Dalmeny fell ill with pleurisy during the Christmas season of 1850. While he appeared to be recovering in January 1851, he died suddenly of heart failure on 23 January 1851.
Following his death, Lady Dalmeny remarried in 1854, becoming the second wife of Harry Powlett, 4th Duke of Cleveland.
