Introduction

Liang Jinsong, born in 1952, grew up in Hong Kong. His family was financially strained; his father worked as a restaurant waiter, and he had nine siblings. Liang attended Ying Wa College and performed well academically. In the Form 5 (equivalent to Grade 11) promotion exam he scored only 13 points and nearly faced repeating a year or dropping out, but a perceptive teacher intervened and secured his promotion to Form 6 (Grade 12). After a year of effort, he entered the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong as the top arts candidate in the university entrance examinations, majoring in economics and statistics.

During university, Liang was active in student affairs, serving as president of the University of Hong Kong Students' Union and promoting a movement to reconnect with Hong Kong’s and China’s cultural roots. He was invited by Mr. Dong Haoyun to join the "Haishang Xuefu" project, traveling by cruise to visit countries around the world and broaden his horizons. In 1973, Liang graduated with a Bachelor of Social Sciences with honors. He later completed the Management Development Program at Harvard Business School in 1982 and an Advanced Management Program there in 1999.

Professionally, Liang worked at Citibank from 1974 for 23 years, holding management positions across Asia-Pacific investment banking, commercial banking, and private banking. He served in key posts in the Philippines, New York, Singapore, and other locations, becoming one of the first locally developed Citibank bankers from Hong Kong. In 1996 he was promoted to Chairman for the Asia-Pacific region of JPMorgan Chase, and he declined to emigrate to the United States, demonstrating his loyalty to Hong Kong.

In 1997 he joined the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government as an unofficial member of the Executive Council. In 2001 he was appointed Financial Secretary of Hong Kong, during which he implemented several major fiscal policies. He resigned in 2003 for personal reasons. After resigning, Liang joined the Blackstone Group as Chairman for Greater China, beginning a new business chapter. In 2014 he became Chief Executive Officer of the Nan Fung Group.

Liang has held multiple important public positions, including chairman of Hong Kong’s Committee for Education Grants, chairman of the Education Co-ordination Committee, director of the Hong Kong Futures Exchange, and director of the Airport Authority Hong Kong. In 2009 he was invited to serve as a visiting professor at Nankai University, where he gave lectures on the financial crisis and promoted links between academia and practice. He has also served as an independent director of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and as chairman of the Hong Kong branch of the International Little Heifer charity.

On the personal side, Liang was formerly married to Ms. Tam Suk-fun; they later divorced. He is now married to former Olympic diving champion Fu Mingxia, and they have a son and a daughter. Liang Jinsong holds influence in Hong Kong and internationally through his roles in finance, government, and philanthropy.
