Introduction
Emily Julia Sheffield, born on 11 April 1973, in London, United Kingdom, is a British journalist with a career spanning various media and editorial roles. She is the daughter of Sir Reginald Sheffield, 8th Baronet, and Annabel Jones. Her parents divorced in 1974, and in 1976 her mother married William Astor, 4th Viscount Astor, after which she became Annabel Astor, Viscountess Astor. Annabel Astor had three additional children with William Astor, while Sir Reginald Sheffield also had three children with his second wife, Victoria Penelope Walker.
Sheffield was born at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in London. She attended Marlborough College, from which she was expelled following a police raid that found cannabis in her dormitory. Later, she studied English at the University of East Anglia, where she was awarded the title of Student Journalist of the Year in 1995.
Her early career included work as a columnist and features assistant for The Guardian. She subsequently joined the Evening Standard. By 2005, she was working for British Vogue, where she served as deputy editor for twelve years until 2017. Her tenure ended when she was made redundant following a change in editorship, with Edward Enninful succeeding Alexandra Shulman.
In 2014, Sheffield joined the board of Koovs, an Indian fashion website and retailer founded by Labour Party peer Lord Alli after his departure from ASOS plc. Koovs went into administration in December 2019, ending her directorship role.
Following her time at Vogue, Sheffield founded a news app called #ThisMuchIKnow, supported by a £60,000 government grant. The app aimed to deliver "positive news" but faced challenges in gaining sufficient audience engagement and staff retention. She is also a co-founder and remains a director of Future News Innovation.
Sheffield was appointed editor of the Evening Standard in July 2020, succeeding George Osborne, who became the newspaper's editor-in-chief. Her tenure lasted until October 2021; she announced her departure but continued to write a column for the publication.
In 2022, she became a regular panellist on The News Desk with Tom Newton Dunn and guest co-hosted Piers Morgan Uncensored on TalkTV.
Personal details include her relocation to London as a teenager. In 2002, she married actor Tom Mullion, with whom she has two sons. Mullion is a co-founder of the bowling chain All Star Lanes and the restaurant Kitty Fisher's in London's Shepherd Market. In 2013, Sheffield accidentally shared a photograph on Instagram showing her sister Alice with then-Prime Minister David Cameron in the background, sleeping on a bed with a red ministerial box nearby. This photograph was widely shared and liked beyond her initial audience.
