He was a British Army officer who served during World War II and held the position of High Sheriff of Berkshire. Personal Life
William Malcolm Mount was the eldest son of Sir William Mount, 1st Baronet, and his wife Hilda Lucy Adelaide Low. He was born in 1904 and received his education at Eton College before attending New College, Oxford.
On October 17, 1929, he married Elizabeth Nance Llewellyn in a ceremony held at St. John the Baptist, Moulsford, Berkshire (which is now part of Oxfordshire). Elizabeth was born in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, on December 22, 1904, and passed away on December 5, 1994. William Malcolm Mount and Elizabeth Nance Llewellyn had three daughters:
- Cecilia Mary (1931–2018), who married Sir William Dugdale, a landowner from Warwickshire and former chairman of Aston Villa football club. She was the mother of documentary filmmaker Joshua Dugdale.
- Mary Fleur (born 1934), who married Ian Donald Cameron and was the mother of David Cameron.
- Viola Clare (born 1938), who married Dr. John Robert Blyth Currie.
Baronetcy
William Malcolm Mount inherited the Mount baronetcy of Wasing, Berkshire, on December 8, 1930, following the death of his father. This inheritance included the family estates.
Military Career
Mount was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 99th (Bucks and Berks Yeomanry) of the Territorial Army (TA) in the Royal Regiment of Artillery on February 25, 1924. His service number was 28268. He was promoted to lieutenant on February 25, 1926, and to captain on March 1, 1937. Subsequently, he attained the rank of major on September 17, 1938.
During World War II, Mount served in the Allied forces and was wounded during the D-Day Normandy landings. On September 14, 1941, he transferred to the Reconnaissance Corps, continuing to use the service number 28268. He was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (Territorial) (TD) on May 15, 1942. Later, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
Aviation Involvement
Mount had a strong interest in aviation, serving as a director of the Miles Aircraft Company. In 1950, he was involved in a legal case, standing trial with F.G. Miles on 24 charges of making false and reckless statements related to the 1946 Miles share prospectus. He also contributed to the development of Brimpton Airfield.
Berkshire Appointments
In 1960, Mount was appointed as High Sheriff of Berkshire and served as Vice-Lieutenant for Berkshire.
Death and Succession
William Malcolm Mount died in 1993 at the age of 88. At his death, he had three daughters and no surviving sons. His baronetcy was inherited by his nephew, Ferdinand.
