Introduction
Lady Cylla Dugdale (née Cecilia Mary Mount) was born on January 15, 1931, and passed away on December 4, 2018. She was a British artist and art collector known for her engagement with 20th-century British "kitchen sink" art and her support of local artists.
Born and raised in Berkshire at Wasing Place, Cylla was the eldest child of Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Mount, Baronet, and Elizabeth Mount (née Llewellyn). Her notable relatives include her nephew, David Cameron, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and her cousin, Sir Ferdinand Mount, a writer and political commentator.
For her early education, Cylla attended Oakdene and St Andrew's School in Pangbourne. She furthered her studies in Switzerland and acquired an agricultural diploma from Moulton College in Northamptonshire. Her artistic training took place in London under the tutelage of Carel Weight and included engagement with the Courtauld Institute of Art.
Throughout her life, Cylla traveled extensively, including voyages on the RMS Queen Mary and journeys across the United States. She also worked as a liaison officer at Greenham Common airbase in Berkshire. As an artist, her work included portraits and landscapes often characterized by a style reminiscent of Augustus John.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Cylla was an avid collector of British art from the 20th century, with a particular interest in the "kitchen sink" art movement. She actively supported local artists and contributed to the artistic community.
Regarding her family estate, management of the Wasing Estate was transferred to her son Joshua Dugdale in 2008, and he inherited it entirely in 2019 following her death.
