Introduction

William Lloyd George, 3rd Viscount Tenby, JP, was born on 7 November 1927 and died on 7 June 2023. He was a British peer and army officer, and a grandson of the former Prime Minister David Lloyd George.

Family and Early Life:

He was the younger son of Gwilym Lloyd George, 1st Viscount Tenby, a politician affiliated with the National Liberal party who served as Home Secretary from 1954 to 1957 before becoming Viscount Tenby. His mother was Edna Gwenfrom Jones. William Lloyd George was the grandson of David Lloyd George, the Liberal Prime Minister, whom he visited regularly at Bron-y-de in Churt, Surrey, during school holidays.

In 1955, he married Ursula Diana Ethel Medlicott (1929–2022), daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Edward Medlicott and Clare Charlotte Marjorie Gabrielle Gosselin. Ursula was a niece of cricketer Walter Medlicott. Their union produced three children: Sara Gwenfron Lloyd George (born 1957), Clare Mair Lloyd George (born 1961), and Timothy Henry Gwilym Lloyd George, who became the 4th Viscount Tenby (born 1962).

Education:

William Lloyd George attended Eastbourne College. He then served with the Royal Welch Fusiliers and maintained a Territorial Army commission with the regiment. In 1949, he enrolled at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, where he studied history and earned a Bachelor's degree.

Career:

Following his education, he worked as an advertising manager for United Dominions Trust. In 1974, he joined Kleinwort Benson, an investment bank, as a public relations adviser. He left this position in 1988 and subsequently chaired St James Public Relations.

House of Lords:

In 1983, William Lloyd George succeeded his elder brother David as the 3rd Viscount Tenby. As a member of the House of Lords, he sat as a crossbencher. His parliamentary committee memberships included the Procedure and Privileges Committee and the Committee of Selection. After the House of Lords Act 1999, he was among the 90 hereditary peers elected to retain seats in the House.

Throughout his time in the House, he addressed issues such as over-development in south-east England, unit fines, wind turbines in areas of outstanding natural beauty, the right to die, and abortion.

Retirement:

The House of Lords Reform Act 2014 allowed for the retirement of certain peers; William Lloyd George retired from the House on 1 May 2015. His departure triggered a by-election, which was won by Jeffrey Evans, 4th Baron Mountevans.

Public Service:

William Lloyd George served as a Justice of the Peace for Hampshire. He was chair of the north-east Hampshire magistrates from 1990 to 1994 and led the Council for the Protection of Rural England in Hampshire.

Death:

He passed away at the age of 95 on 7 June 2023.
