Introduction
Robert Ker, 2nd Duke of Roxburghe (circa 1709 – 20 August 1755), was a Scottish peer known for his familial lineage and titles. He was the only son of the 1st Duke of Roxburghe and Lady Mary Finch. Lady Mary Finch was the daughter of Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham, and his first wife, Lady Essex Rich.
On 24 May 1722, Robert Ker was granted the titles of Earl Ker, of Wakefield in the County of York, and Baron Ker, of Wakefield in the County of York. Both titles were in the Peerage of Great Britain.
He married Essex Mostyn on 16 June 1739, who was his half-cousin. Essex Mostyn was the daughter of Sir Roger Mostyn, 3rd Baronet, and Essex Finch. Essex Finch was herself the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Nottingham and his second wife, Hon. Anne Hatton. Together, Robert Ker and Essex Mostyn had five children:
- Lord John Ker, who later became the 3rd Duke of Roxburghe
- Lady Essex Ker (born 9 March 1742, died as an infant)
- Lady Essex Ker (born 25 March 1744), who served as a bridesmaid at Queen Charlotte’s wedding in 1761 and died unmarried
- Lady Mary Ker (born 17 March 1746), who died unmarried
- Lt. Col. Lord Robert Ker (27 August 1747 – 20 March 1781)
Robert Ker inherited his father's titles in 1741. He died on 20 August 1755 and was succeeded by his eldest son, Lord John Ker, as the 3rd Duke of Roxburghe.
