Introduction
Sir Ralph Milbanke (1725–1798) was an English baronet and a member of the British Parliament. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Scarborough from 1754 to 1761 and for Richmond from 1761 to 1768.
Born in 1725, Milbanke was a member of an aristocratic landed family from Yorkshire. His father was Sir Ralph Milbanke, the 4th Baronet of Halnaby in Yorkshire, who held the position of High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1721. Ralph Milbanke himself served as High Sheriff of Yorkshire during 1753–54.
In January 1759, amidst the Seven Years' War, he was appointed Colonel of the reformed Richmondshire Battalion, North York Militia. During the American War of Independence, when there was a threat of invasion by France and Spain, he held the position of colonel of the combined North York Militia regiment when the militia was called out again in 1778.
In 1748, he married Elizabeth Hedworth, with whom he had three children: Sir Ralph Noel, who became the 6th Baronet (1747–1825); John Milbanke; and Elizabeth Milbanke (1751–1818).
